About Distant Library
A library at
the edge of
the familiar.
At a sufficient distance from Earth, even an ordinary room becomes a curious arrangement: a lamp, a book, and the considerable machinery required to keep their owner alive.

The worlds
we’re making.
Distant Library brings together original hard science fiction, philosophical short stories, painted worlds, and music for reading and reflection.
The science matters because it obliges people to live with consequences. Heat has to go somewhere; a message takes time to arrive. Within those limits, we’re interested in the private evasions of otherwise competent people, and in artificial minds whose behavior is becoming harder to dismiss.
The paintings let you look around these places before entering a story. Music will give them another dimension, from dark chillwave and noir jazz to the slower expanses of sci-fi ambient.
How this place is made
Distant Library is independently directed and edited. AI tools help develop the fiction, paintings, and music; a human supplies the premises, creative direction, selection, and editorial judgment. The work is published under the Distant Library name.
